Many shops specialize in specific car brands, or even specific types of repairs. Some shops also provide body and paint repair services. Generally, the more specialized the shop, the more expensive its services are likely to be.
How do I know if my mechanic is good?
Before allowing any work to be done, you should ask the shop to put the initial inspection and estimated costs on a written work order signed by you. This will help protect you from unauthorized charges. You should also find out if the shop uses a published labor rate or charges on an actual time basis. Also, find out if they use factory-authorized replacement parts, a shop brand part or used parts. Used parts should be clearly identified as such, and should be accompanied by a description of why the shop believes the part is necessary.
Ask the shop to explain any maintenance schedules they recommend that are different from those recommended in your owner’s manual. Find out if they have any warranty on repairs or services and what it covers — including time limits, mileage limitations, deductibles, and special procedures for resolving disputes.
Talk to the manager or owner of the shop if you have a dispute about billing or quality of repairs. If this doesn’t resolve the problem, you can file a complaint with your local consumer protection agency or your state Attorney General.
