Cannabidiol buy is the hot trend in wellness. You can find it in lotions, tinctures and sprays as well as in water, sodas, juices and gummy bears. You may have heard claims of pain-relieving, anxiety-reducing, anti-inflammatory or sleep-enhancing benefits. It’s available at health food stores and online, but how can you know if it’s safe?

Does CBD affect the brain?

CBD is an extract from the cannabis plant, which contains over 80 chemicals known as cannabinoids. It has been found to have therapeutic effects on certain chemicals in the brain, but unlike marijuana and its psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it doesn’t produce a high. There’s currently only one FDA-approved CBD product, Epidiolex for seizures related to Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut syndromes.

Whether you are looking to add CBD to your diet or try it for a medical condition, it’s important to understand how the chemical is extracted and processed. A poor extraction can taint your product with THC or even contain chemical solvents such as butane or pesticides.

The FDA recommends that you use only products that have been tested by a laboratory. The laboratory must test the sample for a wide range of cannabinoid contents, including cannabidiol and other phytocannabinoids as well as THC and tetrahydrocannabinol metabolites. The laboratory should also report the total cannabinoid content per volume of product. Our lab, Botanacor Services, analyzed CBD-only products for tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabidiol, cannabigerol and other terpenes using liquid chromatography with UV detection. The results were compared to the labeled potency of the product.
